Island Hopping

Maldives is a small country with very limited resources. Tourism is the largest industry which provides the largest amount of foreign currency. In the year 2003 tourist visits hit the highest with more than 500,000 visitors.

In order to preserve the unique culture and life styles of the Maldivians, government has made rules for the tourists who want to visit the inhabited islands. For those who arrange excursions from their hotels need no special permission. However, for those who want to visit by themselves, they have to produce a special permit which is issued by the Ministry of Atolls Development.

The process of receiving the permit is simple, and takes about two hours to process provided all the necessary information are made available. They are:

  1. A letter asking for the permit
    a. The letter should include the name of the atoll and the islands to be visited
    b. Name of a person who would be responsible. The person should accompany the visitors during the excursion.

  2. Copy of the passport

  3. A non-refundable fee of MRf 10/- per person


The payment can be made between
